Q & A

It's normal to feel unsettle about starting therapy. I am here to answer your questions and concerns. If you don't find your questions here, feel free to reach out to me!

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process where a trained therapist helps individuals navigate emotional challenges, gain insights into their thoughts and behaviors, and develop coping strategies to improve their overall well-being.

2

Will I receive a formal psycho assessment?

While I, as a psychotherapist, do not conduct formal psycho assessments, I do utilize informal measures to better understand your needs. If a comprehensive assessment is required, I can discuss potential referrals to psychologists for in-depth assessments or psychiatrists for medication treatments if needed.

3

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I do accept insurance. You can use the receipts I provide to claim reimbursement from your insurance company. To ensure coverage, I recommend verifying with your insurance provider if they cover psychotherapy sessions by a registered psychotherapist and the eligible annual amount. Feel free to contact me if you need additional information for your insurance company; I'm here to assist you.

4

What can I expect from a therapy session?

During our sessions, you can expect a collaborative and supportive environment. I focus on fostering introspective conversations that guide you through a journey of self-discovery in a safe and non-judgmental space. Together, we'll explore your thoughts, feelings, and challenges, working towards personal growth and positive change.

5

How often are therapy sessions typically scheduled?

Initially, sessions are often scheduled on a weekly basis, which helps build a strong therapeutic connection. However, the frequency depends on your needs and budget. Sessions can be arranged weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly, based on what best supports your progress and well-being. We'll tailor the schedule to fit your individual requirements.

6

What issues can psychotherapy help with?

Psychotherapy can assist with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress management, relationship difficulties, grief, life transitions, self-esteem challenges, and personal growth. It provides a supportive space to address emotional struggles, develop coping skills, gain insights, and work towards positive change.

7

Is everything I share in therapy confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychotherapy. What you share during sessions is strictly confidential and will not be disclosed without your explicit consent, except in specific situations where there's a concern for safety. I prioritize creating a safe space where you can freely discuss your thoughts and feelings.

8

How do I choose the right therapist for me?

Choosing the right therapist involves finding someone whose therapeutic approach aligns with your needs. I focus on fostering a non-judgmental and safe space, using an integrative approach tailored to your unique situation. It's essential that you feel comfortable and understood during sessions. After a few sessions, you'll likely have a sense of whether the therapy is helpful for you. Remember, you always have the right to terminate therapy if and when you choose, and your feedback is valued in ensuring your well-being and progress.

9

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies based on when you feel your therapeutic goals have been met. It's a collaborative process, and you can take breaks or discuss new directions as needed. Therapy is a long-term relationship, and you're always welcome to reach out. I don't promise specific results in a set number of sessions, as the journey's duration depends on the depth of your self-learning and growth process. Your comfort and progress are my priority throughout our work together.

10

What is your cancellation policy?

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy in place. If a session is canceled within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment, a fee equivalent to half of the agreed session fee would apply. Please note that this fee cannot be claimed through insurance. However, I do make exceptions for health emergencies and accidents. Outside of the 24-hour window, I'm flexible and more than happy to accommodate changes to your schedule. Your understanding is greatly appreciated in ensuring the smooth flow of our sessions.

11

What should I do if I'm experiencing a crisis between sessions?

If you find yourself in a crisis between sessions, I'm here to provide support. I offer dedicated crisis management sessions for new clients ($100) and existing clients (agreed fees) on Fridays. These sessions are designed to address urgent matters, incorporating calming exercises, emotional support, safety planning, resource guidance, and a compassionate environment for processing your feelings and challenges. However, if you require immediate assistance, please reach out to the Distress Centre Ottawa at 613-238-3311, go to the nearest Emergency Room, or dial 9-1-1. Your well-being remains a priority, and I'm here to assist you during times of crisis.
